One of Those Days

You know how sometimes you just have one of those days?  The kind where you wish you could just go to bed and start all over again.  Well, yesterday was one of those days for me.  It wasn’t one big thing, but a bunch of little things that were getting me down.  I had a disagreement (or three) with Doug, which always puts me in a funk.  I miss home, my parents and sisters.  I feel so lucky to have such a close, great relationship with all of them because I know a lot of people don’t, but it’s extremely difficult to live so far from them.  It usually hits me hardest on days when they are all doing something together, and yesterday was one of those days.  I wish so badly I could join in the fun.  I guess I was just feeling a little lonely.

But here’s the thing, even though it was a pretty horrible day, it wasn’t THAT bad because of Drew.  All I have to do when I’m having a tough time is look at that smiling face and suddenly everything seems okay.  He’s just so perfect and he makes me so happy.  Sometimes I still can’t believe he’s mine.  He’s my little angel and I don’t know what I’d do without him.

So, thank you Drew, for helping mom realize that it’s not so bad and really, in the end, I live a pretty blessed life.  Here’s to hoping today goes a little bit better!

High Five for Friday

It’s Friday again!  This week really flew by for me, and I can’t believe it’s already Friday.  But I’m not complaining.  Bring on the weekend!

1.    We signed Drew up for swimming lessons this week.  My entire family, my parents, my sisters and their husbands, and Doug, Drew and I, are going to Hawaii over Thanksgiving this year.  Doug and I thought it would be a good idea to have Drew take some swimming lessons before we go so that he’s used to the water and swimming in case we want to take him in the pool while we are there.  I have to say that I’m excited, but also a little nervous for the lessons.  I hope Drew likes it and does okay in the water.  He seems to like his baths, so I’m hoping that means he will like swimming as well.  With two collegiate swimmers as grandparents, he has to have some of that in his genes, right?  Let’s hope so.  Doug and I will do the lessons with him, so I think it will be a fun little family activity.  Plus, it will help us get in the mood for Hawaii!!

2.    We got Drew some ear muffs for the Bobcat games this week too.  I never really noticed how noisy the stadium was until we had Drew there.  It gets so loud, and I worry about his little ears, so I think this will help ease my worries.  Plus, he looks pretty darn cute in them!

3.    I had lunch with a couple of girlfriends this week.  It was fun to catch up with them and have them see Drew again.  It also reminded me about the need for good girlfriends.  One of these ladies in particular, was so great when I was pregnant with Drew.  She was the only person who was honest with me about what to expect and what would happen during pregnancy and delivery.  Her stories were a little intense, but I so appreciated her honesty.  I’m the kind of person that likes to know everything about a situation so that I can, as I call it, “mentally prepare.”  She definitely helped me mentally prepare, and I owe her big time for it.

4.    The Voice started back up again this week, and I love it.  It’s such an entertaining show. I love music and the singers are incredible.  I can’t wait to watch another season!

5.    Last night, like most Thursday nights in our house, was date night.  We went to Ale Works for dinner, which is one of our favorite restaurants in town.  The food was great, and if you ever find yourself there on a Thursday night, I highly recommend the Thai Coconut Curry soup.  It’s delicious!

After dinner, we went home to watch the Bobcat volleyball team take on Eastern Washington on the iPad.  Drew even got into the game!

And finally, Doug and I enjoyed some red wine and cherry truffles.  The truffles were delectable!  Doug made fun of me for using the word delectable last night, but I think it’s really the perfect description!

So there you have it, the five highlights of this week!  Happy Friday from my little buddy and me!

No Snow?

Well, I’d been planning on writing about the snow on Thursday all week.  The weatherman assured me that even those of us in the valley would see a flake or two.  I’ve been so excited.  I went to bed last night feeling like a kid on Christmas, just sure I would wake up to a white winter wonderland.  But this morning came, and there was not a flake.  Surely one will come by noon.  Nope.  Still nothing.  I’m crushed.  I was eagerly awaiting the first snow of the season, and it looks like I’m still going to have to wait.  And, that means my whole post for today is ruined.  Thank you Mother Nature and Mr. Weatherman.  You’ve ruined my blogging plans. ;)

So what to talk about, what to talk about?  I guess I’ll go with a product that I’ve been loving lately.  A couple of the bloggers that I follow mentioned a shampoo and conditioner that they had tried and liked.  Conveniently, I had just run out of my normal Pantene, so I thought I’d give it a whirl.  It’s the L’Oreal EverPure collection, the volume shampoo and volume conditioner.  It’s sulfate-free, which I think just means that it doesn’t have any harsh salts that can strip away your color if you have color treated hair.  So this particular product promises to help reduce color fade and create volume.  What?  A shampoo and conditioner that does both?  That’s unheard of, right?  So, if you know me, you know that those are two things that I really need.  I have highlighted hair, so I love a product that will help reduce fading, and I have thin, fine hair that could definitely use some volume.  I gave this combo a shot figuring that if it did one of the two, that would be a win in my book.

Let me tell you, I love it! And I think it does both.  I’ve been using it for about a month now (I started right after a fresh highlight), and I really think it has helped my color stay fresh and vibrant.  I’ve also noticed a definite increase in volume.  My hair is usually very lifeless, but this has definitely added volume and texture.  It’s been great!  The only thing I’m not crazy about is the smell. The bloggers who recommended this product to me were raving about the smell, but I don’t like it.  The shampoo is Rosemary Juniper and the conditioner is Rosemary Mint.  I have to say that I think it smells a little old lady.  I’m not crazy about it.  But I’ll deal with the less than pleasant aroma for the results it has given my hair.  If you have hair that could use some volume and some anti-fading, I would highly suggest this duo.  It’s been great and I think I’ll probably be using it for quite some time.

So there you have it.  Not as exciting as snow, I know.  And I’m still bummed about that.  But, as my husband would say, it was a good audible to a hair care product!  Ha!  I hope you enjoyed it!

Wednesday Wisdom

I randomly came across this quote twice last week, so I figured there must be a reason for it.  I really like the quote and think the message is pretty great.  So often in life, we limit ourselves and tend to believe that there are things that we “just can’t do.”  But the reality is, we are capable of so much more than we could ever dream possible.  We just have to have the courage and the gumption to TRY.  I’ve always been a big believer in the thought that there’s nothing you can’t do if you put your mind to it.  But it is definitely something that I think we all need to be reminded of now and again. Living the life of your dreams is completely attainable if you work for it every day and give it everything you have.  But there has to be action involved.  We can’t just expect our dreams to come true with no plan and no action.  Once we know what we’re after, we need to figure out the steps to take to make it a reality.  We need to take control of our own happiness and success.  I know I need to be reminded of that often, and I think this quote is a great reminder that we are in control of making our dreams come true.

I feel like I couldn’t be more blessed, and I’m pretty much living my dream.  But the thing about dreams is, they are constantly changing and evolving.  Once you’ve accomplished one dream, there’s another right there to take its place.  I think it’s important to always be working towards a goal because we can always improve and always strive for more.  There’s nothing we can’t accomplish.  Every day, I want to turn my can’ts into cans and my dreams into plans.  So today, I encourage you to dream big and make your wildest dreams your reality.

Note: The Dream Big canvas is a little crayon art that I made for Drew's nursery.  It turned out pretty good.  Not as good as the ones I've seen on Pinterest, but I was pretty happy with it!

Cascadia

One of the most attractive features of our new house is its proximity to trails.  We’re so much closer to a multitude of hiking and biking trails; we even have a trail that runs through our neighborhood.  It’s extremely convenient to be able to walk out our back door and be on a trail!  As you know, Doug and I are both very active people, so this was a definite selling point of the home.

Doug has always been a big runner.  He runs pretty much every day, so having the trails right there to run on has been something he has loved about the new house.  There was a time in my life when I ran everyday too, but it’s definitely become more difficult with Drew. Finding time to exercise is hard, and Doug and I really struggled at first finding a balance where we both felt like we were getting the time we needed to get our exercise in.  We’ve come up with a pretty good system now, and it has definitely allowed me to have that time to get a workout in that has become a necessity for both my health and my sanity.

One saving grace is that we are so close to trails that it doesn’t take too long to go for a quick trail run.  So I’ve decided that trail running is now my choice activity.  I started out running on the trail through our neighborhood with my regular running shoes, and I quickly learned that, not only did those shoes get dirty on the first run, but they weren’t really built for the trail. So I needed some new trail running shoes (darn!).

Doug and I went down to Bozeman Running Company where I got my old running shoes to try to find a trail shoe that would work for me.  Buying my old running shoes was one of the most pleasurable shopping experiences I’ve ever had because the employees are so knowledgeable and helpful.  I knew this time around they would help me find the perfect trail running shoe.  Tyler (my favorite BRC employee – Doug thinks I have a little crush!) helped me find my old running shoes, so I knew he’d be the perfect person to help me find a trail shoe.

Now, if you’re a girl that is not extremely girly and don’t really like the color pink, you know it’s tough to find anything women specific in any other color.  For some reason, manufacturers think that, if you’re a woman, you want something covered in pink.  I’ve never been a huge fan of pink, so I knew finding a shoe that fit well and that I liked the look of might be a bit of a challenge.

Tyler pulled a bunch of different trail shoes for me to try on.  There were a couple that I had to rule out immediately because they were so pink.  Going into it, Doug thought I would want the Brooks Cascadia because that’s what he runs in, but my old running shoes are Mizuno (and I LOVE them), so I thought I might like that one better.  After trying on all of my options, I ended up choosing the Brooks Cascadia.  They were by far the most comfortable and seemed to be made better than any of the other shoes that I tried on.  They have some pink on them, and they're actually not a shoe that I would have ever thought I would like, but for some reason, I just do.  I’ve used them a few times now and I really like them.

I’m also the type of person that is motivated by new gear, so getting these new shoes has helped me want to get out there and get running. It was a great purchase, and I’m so happy that I’m getting in some trail running this Fall.

Triple Tree

One of my favorite Fall activities is hiking.  There’s just something about being out in the clean, crisp air among the trees with their beautifully changing leaves that makes me happy! And it just so happens that hiking is one of the activities we can do pretty easily with Drew.  He’s a trooper and seems to like it as well.  We’ve gradually worked up his distance and this Sunday we went six miles with no trouble.

The weather was supposed to be terrible on Sunday, so I didn’t think we’d get much fun in outside, but when we woke up, it looked pretty nice, so Doug suggested we take off for a hike early to try to beat the weather.  We loaded up Drew and headed out to the Triple Tree trailhead, which is pretty darn close to our new house!  It’s a hike that we had done before, but we’d heard that they completely changed the trail, so we were excited to check it out.

The hike was beautiful.  As you can see from the pictures, the leaves were beginning to change color up there.  The new trail was fun and a definite improvement.  It was much less steep and a little bit longer than it used to be which was nice.  Drew did great, as usual.  He was fascinated with the trees and waving leaves. He’s so curious and I love watching him take in the world around him.

I’m sure within the next couple weeks, the leaves will really be changing up there.  I think we’ll try to get out and do the Triple Tree hike again to take in the colors. It was a fun Sunday activity and the perfect way to ease into Fall.

High Five for Friday!

Well friends, it’s Friday again, and you know what that means…..high five for Friday!  It’s been a pretty good week around here, but I’m so excited it’s Friday.  I can’t wait to spend the weekend with my wonderful family. Here are a few highlights from the week:

1.    I made my favorite dessert earlier this week, and I’ve been enjoying a brownie a day all week long. Is that bad?

2.    Drew and I got quite a bit of mother/son bonding time at the house this week due to the crazy rain. We enjoyed our time making fun around the house.  It’s always a blast spending time with him and watching him learn and grow every day.  I know I say this a lot, but he’s the best!

3.    If you know me, you know that I have a little thing for nail polish. I paint my nails almost every week, usually with a different color.  This week, I picked up a new Fall color from Sally Hansen called “Gold Roses,” and I absolutely LOVE it.  Rose gold is really “in” right now, and I think the shade of this polish would look good on any skin tone.  I painted my nails last weekend, and they are still holding up pretty well.  I didn’t get my first chip until four days in, which is pretty incredible.  If you’re looking for a good, neutral Fall color (that will last!), I highly suggest this one!

4.    Wednesday night, my wonderful husband took me out for an impromptu date night to Copper Whiskey Bar & Grill.  It was delicious! Good food, good company, good conversation, there’s not much more you can ask for.

5.    Last night, we went to Shroyer gym to listen to Billy Mills speak.  Billy is the 1964 Olympic 10,000 meter run gold medalist.  He is originally from Pine Ridge, a reservation in South Dakota, so I had heard about him growing up.  He’s the only American to ever win the Olympic gold in that event, which is a pretty big deal.  His talk was inspiring and it was pretty cool to see an Olympic medalist from my home state.  I think I’ll write more about his message next week, but listening to him speak was definitely a highlight of the week.

As a side note to this……for those of you that were at the blistering hot volleyball game last Friday night, you’ll get a kick out of this.  When Billy first started his talk, we couldn’t hear a thing because of the…..wait for it……air conditioner!  What?!  Where in the heck was that last Friday when we were all melting to death.  Crazy.  Finally, the MSU track coach had someone turn it off so we could hear, but how crazy is that? I sure could have used some good ol’ AC last weekend!

Happy Friday everybody!

Rainy Days

It has been raining here for the last few days.  And I don’t say that lightly.  It’s been absolutely downpouring at times.  Needless to say, Drew and I have been housebound for the majority of the week.  We’re used to getting out at least once a day, usually for a walk around the neighborhood, but the torrential rain has kept us cooped up.  It’s been a little tough to not leave the house and try to come up with things to entertain a 4 ½ month old, but we’re making do.  Here’s how we’ve spent our days:

1.    Napping (Well, he’s been napping.  I’ve never been much of a napper.  When the sun is up, I’m up.  I know they always say, sleep when your baby is sleeping, but I’m not good at that.  Luckily Drew has been sleeping through the night since 8 weeks, so I haven’t had a huge need for naps.  Don’t hate me, I’m lucky, I know!).  The dreary weather has really gotten to Drew and he’s been sleeping in later and taking more naps than usual.  The extra rest usually makes for a happy baby, so I’m all for his newfound love for sleep!

2.    Jumping.  Drew got this jumper from his grandma Brenda and he loves it.  He’s not quite big enough to be totally in control, but I watch him closely.  He’s fascinated by all of the objects on the jumper.  Especially the rolling ball.  He’s really into licking things these days, so he’s really been loving to lick the rolling ball.  I explain to him that it’s not for licking, but he doesn’t seem to care what I say!  He definitely has a mind of his own (kinda like his momma)!

3.    Reading.  Drew has received all sorts of books from friends and family, so we’ve been reading all of his books this week.  It’s funny how I like the stories just as much as he does.  Some of them even bring a tear to my eye (I’m a softy, I know!). I think it’s good for Drew to listen to the books even though he might not totally understand what's going on.  Hopefully it will help him develop a strong vocabulary.  Right now, he just loves to look at the colorful pictures.

4.    Rolling.  Drew has been a rolling machine lately.  Whenever I put him on his tummy, he immediately rolls to his back.  He’s gotten it figured out and now doesn’t waste any time getting off his stomach.  It’s pretty cute! I just hope when the time comes for him to crawl, he’ll spend enough time on his tummy to figure it out.

And that’s about it.  It’s been fun to explore our new house and find things to entertain us here, but we’re both excited for the weather to shape up and get a little nicer! We’re excited for Fall and all the new fun it will bring!

Heaven in a Brownie

We had some friends over for dinner on Monday night, so earlier this week, I had to make a quick trip to the grocery store.  Let me tell you, it’s beginning to look a lot like fall out there.  The aisles were lined with autumn decorations, Halloween costumes, and loads of Halloween candy for the soon to be trick-or-treaters!  While perusing the candy aisle, I came across a bag of caramels.  I suppose these are for making those delicious caramel apples this time of year, but it made me think about my favorite brownie recipe that also calls for a bag of those caramels.  I figured if the dinner we prepared for our friends wasn't so good, I could make up for it with these brownies.  So I picked up a bag (or two!) and headed home to make the world’s best brownies!

Today, I’ll share this wonderful, tasty, delicious, heavenly recipe with you!

Ingredients:

·         One German chocolate cake mix
·         3/4 c. melted margarine
·         2/3 c. evaporated milk
·         One bag caramels
·         6 oz. chocolate chips

Mix the German chocolate cake mix, margarine, and 1/3 c. evaporated milk together in a large bowl.  Spread half of the batter into a greased 9x13 cake pan.  Bake for six minutes at 350 degrees.  Do not overbake!

While the batter is baking, melt the caramels with 1/3 c. evaporated milk.  Take the pan out of the oven and sprinkle 6 oz. of chocolate chips over the baked batter.  Pour the caramels over the batter and chocolate chips.

Spread the remaining batter on top.  It doesn’t really spread that easily, so it’s easiest to lay flattened pieces of batter on the top until the whole pan is covered.  Bake again for 18-20 minutes at 350 degrees.  Do not overbake!

Take out of the oven and let cool completely before you cut.

There you have it, the world’s best brownie!  Yum!  I’m drooling as I write this.  In fact, I think I’ll go have one now.

DIY: Wood Photography

Note: I did this project before I had planned on sharing it in this blog, so I don’t have “in process” pictures to show you.  Next time, I will be sure to take pictures as I go so you have a better idea of the steps that I took.  Sorry!

We moved into a new home about two months ago, and I’ve been having tons of fun organizing and decorating the new house.  It’s been really exciting to make it our own.  I’ve been most excited about decorating the master bedroom.   In our old house, I never really had the chance to decorate the master bedroom because it was Doug’s room before I moved in (once we were married, I moved into his house).  I never felt comfortable changing his décor, so we left it mostly the same.

In the new house, I knew I wanted to make a special retreat in the master for Doug and I that reflected us as a couple.  I thought it would be nice to incorporate some of our wedding pictures because it’s the day that we started this journey as a family together and it’s one of the best days of our lives.  It’s sad, but we didn’t have one wedding picture hung in our old house.  I think we both knew that we’d be moving eventually, so we never got around to it.  Anyway, all of the other pictures in our house are hung in very standard black frames.  They all go together and it looks nice, but I kind of wanted to do something a little different and special in the master.  Then I remembered that at one time, I saw that you could transfer a picture to a piece of wood.  I thought that would be the perfect way to display wedding pictures in our room because it would go with the décor/style of the house, and also be a unique way to incorporate our wedding photos.

So I began the search on Pinterest (I’m addicted and love it!).  The ideas on Pinterest were all great, but I wasn’t really finding what I was looking for, so I did a quick Google search on how to transfer pictures to wood.  I found a great demonstration/tutorial called “How to Transfer Prints to Wood: An Awesome Photography DIY Project.”  I read through the article and decided that I would give it a go.  At first, I wanted to do one large picture on a fairly large piece of wood, but after I couldn’t find a large enough piece of wood that I liked, I decided to do three smaller pictures.

Here’s what you need:

·         A laser printed photo (mirror image if you want it to look like the original on the wood)
·         A piece of wood (in my case, three)
·         Gel Medium
·         Sponge brushes
·         Mod Podge or a similar sealant

So, first you need to determine what photo you want to transfer.  Like I mentioned before, I decided to do three smaller pictures rather than one large one because I couldn’t find a piece of wood large enough that I liked.  Once I chose the three pictures that I wanted to use, I used the program PhotoScape to make mirror images of the pictures.  You wouldn’t necessarily have to do this step, but if you want the picture to look like the original on the piece of wood, you have to mirror it.  If you don’t mind if it’s backwards, you can just use the original picture.

Once I had the mirror images saved, I took them to Staples where I got three 11x14 laser prints made on regular paper (not photo paper).  You have to make sure that it is a laser print (not ink jet), otherwise it will not transfer correctly.

After I had my pictures ready, I went to Michael’s and chose three wood plaque type things to transfer the pictures to.  I got two oval and one rectangle, and they all had bark around the outside, which I liked because it gave it more of a rustic feel.  I also needed to get some gel medium.  I had no idea what gel medium was, so I randomly chose this one, and hoped it would work!

I picked up a few sponge brushes, and made my way home to give this DIY a go!

I started with just one picture to make sure that it worked and I didn’t waste a bunch of time doing three if for some reason it didn’t work. I used the sponge brush to apply the gel medium to the wood.  You want a pretty even coat, that's not too thin and not too gloppy.  This part is just a guess.  I did a thin, even layer, but it must not have been enough in some places because part of the photos rubbed off in later steps.  I didn’t mind though because it gives it a cool, old, weathered look.  Just do your best!

Once you have the gel medium applied, place the picture onto the wood.  This is the scariest part because you want to get the picture applied straight and with as few air bubbles as possible.  I placed the pictures down and then used a small piece of plastic to work the air bubbles out and get the picture as smooth as possible.

Then, you let it dry overnight.

The next step is the most time consuming.  You take a wet washcloth and dampen the paper.  Then, you need to work the paper off of the wood.  I used my fingers to kind of roll the paper off once it was wet.  It’s a long process and you’ll probably have to dampen the paper a few times to get all of the paper off.  After you do it once, let it dry and you will see that there's still quite a bit of paper left on the wood.  Once you get all of the paper off, you can put a sealing layer on if you like.  I used Mod Podge, but it turned out a little streaky so if I did it again, I would use a different top coat. You don’t necessarily have to have a sealing top coat, but I thought it might help it last longer.

Once the top coat is dry, you’re ready to hang your wood pictures.  The wood plaques that I chose did not have any way to hang, so I used Gorilla Glue to attach sawtooth hangers to the backs of all of them.  It worked pretty well.

The wood transferred photos turned out pretty good, better than I was expecting.  And I think it’s a pretty cool look in the master bedroom!
